The first time I go shoplifting with Tom Wheatly I feel a burning sensation in my ears and the back of my neck, and my palms tingle as if baby mice are nuzzling into the center of them. I met Tom about a month ago. He usually wears the same pair of floppy bell-bottoms he dyed a deeper and deeper shade of purple until they turned black as nighttime grass. Tom is over six feet tall, has round wire-frame glasses, isn’t afraid of shoplifting, skipping class, or creating a disturbance by shouting obscenities really loudly. But he’s afraid of snakes. His fear of snakes, along with his pale skin color, is due to the fact that his family just moved down to Florida from upstate New York. He’d never seen a snake before moving to the Sunshine State.
This might be your best writing yet. Loved this one, perhaps for selfish reasons as it resonated all the more because I am only slightly younger than the titular characters, and the account feels so accurate and of its time.
If this is based on your life, you’re a bit younger than my two brothers..l was 5 in 1970, I remember the music, the aluminum trash cans with lids, bell bottom jeans, but oddly enough, I can only remember one of the two “living at home”.
